The Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly dismissed David Blatt from his position as head basketball coach, Yahoo! Sports reported on Friday.
Blatt, the Israeli-American who led the team to the NBA Finals during his first season in the world’s top professional league, achieved success in Europe with Maccabi Tel Aviv and the Russian national team before being hired as the Cavs head man before last season.
Although Cleveland sits atop the Eastern Conference with a 30-11 record, earlier this week it suffered an embarrassing home loss to the Golden State Warriors, the team that denied the Cavaliers a championship in last year’s NBA Finals.
Blatt’s stirring first season was watched with great interest in Israel as fans and media followed the Cavs on their run to the championship round.
In Blatt’s stead, the Cavs have reportedly promoted assistant coach Ty Lue.
