Just two days after the death of her husband, Céline Dion has been dealt another blow: Her brother, Daniel, passed away Saturday morning.
Daniel, 59, had been battling cancer of the throat, tongue and brain. He died in Montreal, surrounded by friends and family, including his 89-year-old mother, at 5 a.m. Saturday.
“Battling cancer for a few years, it’s in the uttermost discretion and surrounded by his family that Daniel Dion, 59, died today, January 16,” Dion’s obituary reads. “Taking in consideration the reserved character of their deceased brother, the family wishes respect and discretion from the media.”
Céline’s husband, René Angélil, died Thursday after a years-long battle with throat cancer.
“It’s very painful. It’s a matter of days or hours,” Céline’s sister Claudette told the Journal of Montreal on Friday. “It looks a lot like René, [Daniel] had cancer of the throat, tongue, and brain. Our family is very experienced.”
Daniel is survived by his two daughters, Valerie and Marie-Michelle, two grandchildren, his mother and 13 siblings.
Céline will resume performances in Las Vegas at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on February 23.
