Heiress Charlotte Casiraghi has ‘abruptly split’ from her boyfriend Gad Elmaleh, according to reports.
American news website People claims that the 28-year-old royal – who is eighth in line to Monaco’s throne – and the French comedian-actor ‘drifted apart’ after three years together.
The couple are parents to a 17-month-old son, Raphaël.
The drama appeared to effect her mindset as she took part in the Longines Athina Horse Show this week as she fell from her horse when tackling a jump.
The princess was not seriously hurt in the fall in Ramatuelle, Saint-Tropez, and was able to get up and walk from the scene but she appeared visibly shaken by the ordeal.
She held her back and clutched her chest to catch her breath as she recovered from the mishap.
She took part in the Horse Show following the rumours that she had separated from the father of her son.
‘It’s sad,’ a source told People. ‘Mostly, this is a couple that drifted apart over their careers.
‘He wasn’t around enough – and she wanted a father for her son.’
There is a 16-year age gap between the princess – whose mother is Monaco’s Princess Caroline and grandmother is the late American actress-turned-Princess Grace Kelly – and the 44-year-old performer.
After meeting at a party in late 2011, the pair chose to keep their romance out of the spotlight.
They made their first public appearance together in March 2013 alongside members of the Monaco royal family at the Bal de la Rose – a ball in honour of the Princess Grace Foundation.
Despite rarely discussing his private life, Gad told People in October 2013: ‘She’s a smart and very intelligent girl who has a lot of humor.’
He added: ‘I’m the happiest man – really, I am. I am lucky to be with her.’
The pair continued to maintain a quiet profile even as competitive horse jumper and Gucci model Charlotte gave birth to their son in December that year.
Never married, the couple split their time largely between France and Los Angeles.
Moroccan-born Gad has a 15-year-old son, Noé, from a previous relationship with French actress Anne Brochet.
Eyebrows were raised last month when Charlotte walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival alone.
On Thursday, French outlet Voici revealed that she had returned to Paris after the event but checked into a luxury hotel instead of returning to the couple’s apartment.
Sources told People that two men, including a chauffeur, removed her things from the flat that weekend, while she and her son flew to Monaco on Monday.
Gad is expected to return to America later this month.
