Russian Hackers Penetrated DNC, Stole Opposition Research on Trump

Russian government hackers penetrated the Democratic National Committee’s database and stole its opposition research on Donald Trump, according to a report published by the Washington Post.

DNC officials and security experts say the hackers were able to read all email and chats in the compromised system.

Some of the hackers had been in the DNC system for a year, the paper said.

They were expelled from the computer system this past weekend.

DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz says the party’s been trying to “quickly” fix the problem.

“The security of our system is critical to our operation and to the confidence of the campaigns and state parties we work with. … When we discovered the intrusion, we treated this like the serious incident it is… Our team moved as quickly as possible to kick out the intruders and secure our network,” Wasserman Schultz said in a statement.

The Russians also targeted Hillary Clinton’s campaign, Trump’s campaign, and various political committees.

It is unclear whether the hackers were successful in penetrating any other target.

News of the break-in became public Tuesday — Trump’s 70th birthday..
