The television presenter and pop mogul Simon Cowell was robbed of jewellery and cash worth thousands of pounds after a burglar raided his home while he slept.
The thief is understood to have emptied Cowell’s safe of money and jewels after finding the key to it as he searched for valuables.
Cowell’s bodyguard was woken after a burglar alarm at the £10 million house in Holland Park, west London, was activated at 2.20am on Friday.
Cowell, 56, his girlfriend Lauren Silverman, 38, and his baby son Eric were understood to have been asleep when the burglar sneaked in.
A source said: “Unfortunately security was anything but safe. The burglar found the key and ‘bingo,’ he was in.
“Some of the gems were sentimental and there was some cash in the safe. The value of what was taken is well into six figures.”
A family friend told The Sun: “Obviously Simon and Lauren are really badly shaken by this.
“It is a horrible violation of their privacy. But more than anything they are incredibly relieved no one was hurt.
“As upsetting as it is, Simon can cope with losing possessions, as long as his family are safe. That is his one and only concern.
Still, it’s incredibly worrying and he is obviously going to review security.
“He likes to live as normal a life as possible and doesn’t want his house to be like Fort Knox, but his family need to feel safe in their own home.”
Cowell, who is worth at least £300millionfrom the worldwide success of his Syco Entertainment company, has a personal bodyguard on duty 24 hours a day, along with hi-tech alarm systems.
It is not known how the burglar got in, if they deliberately targeted the mansion, or if it was an opportunistic break-in.
Cowell may have inadvertedly assisted any would-be burglar not only by leaving the keys to the safe in an easy place to find, but by inviting TV cameras into his home two years ago to promote his search for a YouTube star.
The film taken by a camera crew of rooms in the house is still available online. One source said: “It would be priceless in itself to any crook.”
Cowell attended rehearsals ahead of Saturday’s X Factor semi-final barely hours after the burglary.
The source added: “This could not have come at a worse time. Simon is preparing for one of the biggest weekends of his year and needs to be completely focussed.
“Obviously he wants to be with his family but he knows they are safe and are being well looked after, so he needs to be professional and get on with the job at hand.
Police cars were parked outside the address on Friday, with forensics officers examining the scene.
Swabs were taken of the safe’s surface and throughout the house and footage from CCTV cameras was being monitored.
A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to an address in W14 on Friday, 5 December, at approximately 02:20hrs to reports of a burglary in progress.
“Officers attended the scene but the suspect had left the area.”
It is not the first time an intruder has managed to get into the property.
In 2012 Leanne Zaloumis was given a community order after she broke in by smashing a window with a brick.
Cowell was watching TV when he heard a loud bang. Members of his staff her lying on the top shelf of a walk-in wardrobe.
The source told The Sun: “What makes this even worse is that this has happened before. He absolutely loves that house and feels very at home there, so it is difficult for him that it has been violated twice now.”
