NEW JERSEY – An on-duty federal air marshal reportedly left his gun in a mens bathroom stall at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The marshal then boarded the flight he was supposed to protect without his gun.
The incident reportedly happened last month but just became public on Friday. An airport janitor discovered the loaded gun and alerted a supervisor, according to NJ Advance Media.
Port Authority police took the gun and traced the gun to the marshal by looking up its serial number.
Federal air marshals are law enforcement officers within the TSA.
In a statement to Fox 5 News the TSA would not confirm the incident took place, stating: “TSA is investigating these allegations, and if true, appropriate measures will be taken.”
Fox 5 spoke with an air marshal who asked to remain anonymous and didn’t know the specifics of the case but said, “We are completely over worked. Our numbers are down so much that we are flying non stop. I would 100% blame lack of proper rest as the reason that air marshal did that.”
