A Long Island student has sued his own mother after she withheld a $5,000 bar mitzvah gift.
A judge ruled in Jordan Zeidman’s favor on Tuesday, eight years after he was promised the money by his maternal grandmother, Rachel Steinfeld.
Mr Zeidman claimed his mother never gave him the cash, gifted to him by his grandmother, who he calls Baba.
Mr Zeidman’s grandmother gatecrashed his 2007 bar mitzavah with her daughter, his mother, Shirley Zeidman, according to the New York Post.
At Nassau County Small Claims Court, Mr Zeidman testified that his grandmother told him about the cash gift inside the synagogue.
She said she would give it to his mother.
According to court papers, he claimed he never received the cash.
The New York Post reported that Nassau District Court Judge Scott Fairgrieve found his mother liable for conversion and unjust enrichment.
He awarded Mr Zeidman a judgment for the $5,000 that his mom ‘held for [his] benefit and continues to hold, in violation of her fiduciary duty’.
His mother’s lawyer, Jeffrey Schecter, said he will probably appeal and that the ruling wasn’t supported by the evidence.
