The Labour Party’s national executive committee has voted to boycott security company G4S, over its links to Israel.
According to reports, the committee passed the proposal to boycott the private security company that has provided its conference security in recent years by 12 votes to four, because it has links to what the Palestine Solidarity Campaign describes as “Israeli prisons which hold Palestinian political prisoners from occupied Palestinian territory inside Israel”.
It’s understood the decision took place on Tuesday evening after the Labour Party’s NEC meeting.
It is also believed that the majority of the NEC’s 33 members had already left the meeting, including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and deputy leader Tom Watson.
The vote took place on the same day that Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary urged the party to combat delegitimisation of Israel.
At a Westminster lunch on Tuesday Hilary Benn told supporters of Labour Friends of Israel that the bonds between his party and the country were “strong and run deep”, however he did not spell out opposition to boycotts of the country.
Former Communities Secretary and Conservative special envoy for post-Holocaust issues, Eric Pickles, condemned the decision.
“The Labour Party’s boycott of G4S is stupid, pointless and damaging to British jobs. Labour seems to stumble from one fiasco another, engaging in gesture politics that ends up hitting British workers,” he said.
We Believe in Israel director Luke Akehurst, a former member of the NEC, said that he hoped the decision “would be reviewed as soon as possible.”
“I am shocked the NEC would casually pass a motion which both endangers the jobs of members of GMB union that work for G4S and which drives coach and horses through the Labour Party’s long-standing policy against G4S,” he said.
“This decision is not remotely consistent with the Labour Party’s stance against boycotts and hope it will be reviewed as soon as possible.”

על פי דיווחי אתר ג’ואיש כרוניקל, ההחלטה התקבלה ביום חמישי בערב בשעת ערב מאוחר. ולאחר ש-17 חברים אחרים בוועד המנהל כבר עזבו את אולם הדיונים, בכללם קורבין וסגנו.
בדומה לפרשיית אורנג’ בצרפת, ההחלטה התקבלה בעקבות מסע לחצים ממושך וארסי של תנועת ה-BDS בבריטניה. ל-G4S פעילות מגוונת בישראל, הכוללת בין היתר אספקת שירותים ואמצעים לפעילויות מערכת הביטחון ביו”ש.
מחרימי ישראל בבריטניה יצאו בקמפיין בו טענו כי “G4S מסייעת לשלטונות הכיבוש הישראליים להחזיק בכלא הישראלי פעילים פוליטיים מהשטחים הפלסטיניים הכבושים”. הם מיקדו את הלחצים במפלגת הלייבור אשר במשך זמן רב הודיעה כי לא תיכנע כיוון שהיא מתנגדת לחרם ישראל. יתירה מכך, ביום בו התקבלה ההחלטה הצהיר שר החוץ בממשלת הצללים של המפלגה, הילארי בן, כי על הלייבור להיאבק נגד הקריאות לחרם על ישראל.
The National Executive Committee of the UK’s Labour party voted last week to boycott a large British company, allegedly over its commercial ties with Israel.
The party’s committee voted to boycott G4S, which provides advanced security services to companies in 110 countries across the globe. Among others, the company provides services to Israeli prisons that house Palestinian prisoners. On the day of the vote, a few of the party’s members argued the move was an attempt to continue a process of de-legitimization of Israel, but the anti-Israel arguments prevailed.
The decision means that the second-largest political party in the UK will no longer use the company’s services, for example in event security. But the primary result of the vote is that proponents of the boycott have declared a resounding win.
While the party was busy boycotting a company for its ties to Israel, the party’s leader, Jeremy Corbyn, was calling for negotiations with the Islamic State terror organization. We should not be “drawn into responses that feed a cycle of violence and hate,” Corbyn said yesterday.
“The dreadful Paris attacks make the case for a far more urgent effort to reach a negotiated settlement of the civil war in Syria and to end the threat rom ISIS,” he concluded.
