The Hollywood visual effects producer who was found safe in Mexico after he left his job without his phone, wallet, laptop or bag just before Thanksgiving and was missing for ten days spoke out for the first time since he disappeared on November 24.
Eric Kohler, who helped create digital effects for movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Avengers, San Andreas and X-Men, posted on Facebook on Sunday for the first time since he was found safe in La Paz on December 4.
Although he never revealed his substance or vice of choice, the 27 year old said he was an addict and revealed that the post was being written from a facility where he was currently seeking treatment.
Kohler, who was last seen driving his new black Range Rover away from the Vitality VFX facility in Gardena, California, said that he ‘mentally snapped’ after his ‘addiction escalated’.
Although the details were sparse, Kohler said he chose to post because he felt it was ‘finally an appropriate time to reach out and provide an explanation, given I can now see more clearly’.
The second paragraph of the post reads: ‘My name is Eric Kohler and I am an addict.
‘Through a state of exhaustion fueled by the stress and high expectations that were put on me, and the life I chose, my addiction escalated and I mentally snapped.
‘This emotional and physical breakdown caused me to desert the people I care for and most importantly care for me.’
The post from Kohler continues: ‘I honestly wish I had a more outlandish and exciting story to spin that would explain my disappearance and failures, but I do not.
‘At this point the details do not matter, the repercussions are mine to live with.
‘I’ve let down so many people around me, which is not something I’m used to.
‘Though my actions will be ridiculed by the negativity of some, I look forward to the positivity I will bring to those who did care by making my amends and returning the unconditional love you’ve all shown me.’
