The State Department has asked for a copy of the investigation into the inferno that destroyed a 160-year-old Serbian Orthodox church in the Flatiron District, FDNY officials confirm.
The blaze destroyed St. Sabva on W. 25th St. on Sunday evening, just hours after congregants celebrated Orthodox Easter.
Investigators believe the tragic fire was an accident sparked by candles that were left smoldering in a cardboard box after services.
The State Department made the request on behalf of Serbian Embassy officials concerned about a string of Orthodox church fires across the globe.
Two Orthodox churches in Australia also went up in flames on Sunday, as did one in Russia, but authorities do not believe the fires are related.
